I am a professor in the Counseling and Counseling Psychology Programs
in the School of Letters and Sciences. I have been on the faculty as
ASU since 1991, having previously been on the faculty at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Iowa. I received
a bachelor's degree in psychology (1973) and Ph.D. in counseling
psychology (1978) at the University of Missouri-Columbia, as well as a
master's degree in psychology (1975) from Ohio State University. My
primary research interests are psychotherapy process, especially
interpretation and other interventions that change client perspectives
and meanings. I have published over 60 research and theoretical
articles in professional journals, many book chapters, and a book on
the process of psychotherapy. I was Associate Editor and Editor of the
Journal of Counseling and Development, and have served on
the editorial boards of several journals. I currently teach courses in
counseling theory, psychodiagnosis, psychological disorders,
personality assessment, and social psychology. I received the
Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching from the College of Education.
