Research Interests
Deborah Sullivan's continuing research interests are threefold: social epidemiology, turf battles in medicine, and the consequences of commercialization of health care. Her past epidemiological research has focused on race/ethnic differences in infant mortality and homebirth outcomes. She has also chaired dissertations on race/ethnic differences in hypertension, social support and mental health of the elderly, and predictors of HIV testing. Sullivan's current epidemiological research focuses on social predictors of adolescent and young adult obesity. She is also interested in the role of the media and economic and regulatory changes in redefining the scope of medicine and the occupational turf battles that result. She has published books on childbirth and cosmetic surgery and chaired a dissertation on health instruction in women's magazines. Her current research projects in this area examine several aspects of the turf battle between nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists and the emergence of independent nurse midwives in New Zealand. Sullivan's research in the commercial sector in medicine has changed from cosmetic surgery to prescription drug advertising. She has a side interest in the sociology of the body.
