James Hershauer
James Hershauer is an Emeritus Professor of management. He has taught more than 50 different courses in the managerial decision sciences from freshman level through final doctoral seminars. These have included courses in business planning for sustainability, innovation, organizational strategies for sustainable technologies, business processes, operations management, managerial decisions, information systems, simulation, human decision processes, human resource management, supply chain management, sustainable dealership management, and research methodology. He has served on over 55 doctoral dissertation committees and chaired 25 of them. He has chaired more than 150 thesis projects for Business Honors students. Many of the thesis projects were part of DesignSpace and InnovationSpace. He worked with Paul Rothstein in starting DesignSpace and helped Rothstein in founding InnovationSpace.
Hershauer, a charter member of DSI in 1969, has received the award of fellow in the Decision Sciences Institute and was the editor of the Decision Sciences Journal from 1990 through 1992. He has been a co-author on eight research volumes about business practice topics such as productivity, quality, and supply chains. These projects involved working with executives from more than 200 organizations and also working with dozens of faculty from many universities and disciplines. He has published more than 50 articles in a wide variety of journals.
Hershauer retired in 2009 to devote his continuing work to sustainability. His first paper on environmental issues was “Elements of Environmental Compliance Infrastructure,” OM Review, Volume 10, Number 3, July 1994, pp. 51-54 (with Ralph Ponce de Leon, Motorola, Inc.). His most recent environmental project was coedited by Scott McNall and George Basile on "The Business of Sustainability: Trends, Policies, Practices, and Stories of Success." It is a three-volume reference set. Volume I deals with “Global Challenges and Opportunities.” Volume II covers “The Global Supply Web.” Volume III presents case studies describing “The Road to Sustainability.” He has developed and taught three courses on sustainability (corporate strategy and sustainability, sustainability entrepreneurship, and sustainability consulting). He has also developed and taught an online course on sustainability and the auto industry.
