Dr. Shin has been dedicated to extending the scope of health communication and prevention intervention with the focus of culture. Her research intersects with four main areas: 1) substance use and other risky behavior prevention, 2) implementation quality and effect of prevention interventions, 3) media effect and narrative persuasion, and 4) immigrant health and communication.
Dr. Shin has produced 43 publications (with 26 lead or solo author) including 34 peer-reviewed journal articles (SSCI = 22, Scopus = 9, Other = 3), 3 book chapters, and 6 encyclopedia entries. Her research appears on top-tier communication and public health journals, including American Journal of Community Psychology, Computers in Human Behavior, Communication Monographs, Health Communication, Health Education Research, Journal of Adolescence, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Health Communication, Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Prevention Science. She has also made 70 presentations at regional, national, and international conferences in communication and public health including American Psychological Association, American Public Health Association, International Communication Association, National Communication Association, and Society for Prevention Research and received 5 conference awards.
Dr. Shin has been involved in several grant projects serving as co-investigator funded by Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana State Department of Health, and US Department of State. Dr. Shin was also invited to serve as a consultant for the NIH funded grant project on feasibility of a mobile parent-based intervention to reduce alcohol use by high school seniors and as a faculty collaborator for the Asia Mediated Project funded by US Department of Education and contributed to create an educational, online module for Korean comfort women issue and media coverage in US and Korea. She was competitively selected as one of 11 participants for US.-Korea Next Generation Scholar Program (2018-2019) co-sponsored by Center for Strategic and International Studies, University of Southern California's Korean Studies Institute, and Korea Foundation.
