Long Bio

Timothy C. Wong is an Emeritus Professor of Chinese. He was on the faculty at ASU from 1974-1985. In 1995, he returned to be director of the Center for Asian Studies, a post he held until 2002. He now teaches Chinese literature at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the School of International Letters and Cultures. Wong holds an MA degree from the University of Hawaii, where he was a grantee of the East-West Center, and a PhD from Stanford University; he has also studied at the Inter-University Programs for Chinese in Taipei (1966-67) and for Japanese in Tokyo (1972-73). At ASU, he has taught courses in modern Mandarin, Chinese fiction, bibliography, and literary translation.

Research Interests

Wong concentrates his research on the tradition of fiction in both dynastic and modern China, a subject on which he has published extensively. His two most recent books (2003 and 2007) attempt to introduce English readers to examples of stories popular in China's twentieth-century urban centers, especially Shanghai.
