Paul Schmidtke earned his B.S. in physics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Ph.D. in
astronomy from The Ohio State University. He held positions at Kitt Peak National Observatory
in Tucson and the Center for High-Angular Resolution Astronomy at Georgia State University prior
to joining Arizona State University in 1984. During his years of service at ASU, he has had
appointments at both the Tempe and West campuses, initially as faculty research associate in
the Department of Physics & Astronomy. He recently retired as principal lecturer for the School
of Mathematical & Natural Sciences. At the West campus he was responsible for the astronomy
classes for the past twenty years. He also has been active in community outreach, developing
the successful series of West campus astronomy open house events and teaching a set of diverse
courses for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He has collaborated extensively with colleagues
in ASU’s School of Earth & Space Exploration and astronomers at Dominion Astrophysical
Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia. His research focuses on the photometry of X-ray binary
stars, using telescopes around the world as well as in space. He has been a member of ASU's
Emeritus College since January 2019.
