Professor Uday Kulkarni: I received my B.Tech. in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 1976, my MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta in 1979, and my Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1989. I have over 40 years of research, teaching, and industry experience in business analytics, knowledge management, database management.
I was the founding Director of ASU's Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM) degree program launched in 2005. I was also the founding Director of ASU's Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program launched in 2013.
Teaching: I am fortunate to have been recognized for teaching excellence on numerous occasions - as the Outstanding Graduate Teacher in the W. P. Carey School of Business (1996 and 2014) and the Outstanding Teacher in Information System (1997, 1999, 2018).
I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of courses at ASU at executive, graduate, and undergraduate levels in Decision-making with Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, IT and Strategy, e-Business, Object-Oriented Modeling and Programming, Database Systems, Client/Server and Network Systems, etc. I have led and participated in major curriculum design projects. I regularly get invited to teach Executive MBA elective courses by international universities from India, Vietnam, and Peru.
Industry: I conduct presentations and executive seminars on Business Analytics and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) for audiences all over the world. I have advised companies in the IT infrastructure, healthcare, semi-conductor manufacturing, solar power, transportation, financial services, and hospitality industry sectors on business analytics strategy and technology. During the Internet bubble of 2000-2001, I served as the Vice President of Research and Development of a start-up firm, leading its technology development.
Research: My research spans multiple areas including understanding consumer brand engagement via online platforms, identifying antecedents of business analytics capability of firms, assessing knowledge management capability of organizations, and analyzing knowledge-intensive business processes. My prior research contributions have been in the areas of decision-making support using data and knowledge based systems, application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and knowledge based systems to various eBusiness and manufacturing processes.
My publications have appeared in MIS and IEEE journals such as Journal of AIS, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Journal of MIS, Decision Support Systems, and European Journal of Operations Research. I served as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Knowledge Management and chaired SIGDSA, an international special interest group in decision support and analytics, where I am now a board member.
Personal: My wife, Sarita, and I have been married for four over decades, and we have three daughters and a grandson. I thoroughly enjoy outdoors and photography. And, when I am not working or partying, you can find my left brain trying to fix something that does not need fixing, or tinkering with complex woodworking projects some of which I finish.
