Keith Hjelmstad is President's Professor of structural engineering in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
From 2008-11, Hjelmstad was university vice president and dean of the College of Technology and Innovation at Arizona State University. As the dean he was responsible for the applied science and mathematics, engineering, engineering technology, cognitive science and engineering, and technological entrepreneurship and innovation management programs. In this role he assured that the programs were aligned with the mission and vision of the college and ASU. As university vice president, he served on the university leadership team of ASU and he championed further academic development of programs, activities and community relations for the Polytechnic campus.
Prior to coming to ASU, Hjelmstad was on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 25 years where he was a professor, associate dean of academic affairs, and a member of the Science Steering Committee of the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets. As a professor, he was recognized for his excellence in advising and teaching. As associate dean he was instrumental in establishing several innovative programs.
Hjelmstad is the author of the books Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics (2/e, Springer, 2005) and Fundamentals of Structural Dynamics: Theory and Computation (Springer, 2022).
Hjelmstad's research focuses on computational mechanics, earthquake engineering, stability of structures, optimization, structural identification, nondestructive evaluation of large structures, and numerical simulation of complex structures. He is a member of several professional associations for engineers and has served as associate editor of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research and the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering.
