Rudy Guevarra Jr. is Professor and Honors Faculty of Asian Pacific American studies in the School of Social Transformation, and Affiliate faculty in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. He is a former Ford Foundation Senior Fellow and University of California Berkeley Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow. His research and teaching interests include relational Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, Pacific Islander Studies, Filipinx American history, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, U.S. labor and borderlands history, transnational and transpacific migration, race and food studies, Critical Mixed Race Studies, and oral history and memory.
Guevarra is the author of Aloha Compadre: Latinxs in Hawaiʻi (Rutgers University Press, 2023) and Becoming Mexipino: Multiethnic Identities and Communities in San Diego (Rutgers University Press, 2012). He is also the co-editor and co-author of six additional books, including Culinary Mestizaje: Racial Mixing, Migration, and Foodways in the U.S. (University of Texas Press, forthcoming), and Beyond Ethnicity: New Politics of Race in Hawaiʻi (University of Texas Press, 2018). His work has also appeared in the Journal of Asian American Studies, the Journal of American and Canadian Studies, the Journal of San Diego History, and Remezcla Online. His current book project is a biography, In Service of the King: Joaquin Armas, A Mexican Vaquero in Hawaiʻi (Beacon Press). Guevarra is also co-founder and co-director of a digital humanities project, the Latino Pacific Archive (LPA) with Dr. Alexandrina Agloro (ASU).
Guevarra was recently elected as a FANHS National Scholar by the Filipino American National Historical Society in 2022. He is also the recipient of the 2019 Barrio Station César E. Chávez Award for Social Justice, the Early Career Award from the Association for Asian American Studies in 2014, and was a Junior Faculty Fellow for the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education in 2008.
