Cynthia Hawkinson is an instructor of social science at ASU's Polytechnic campus and online. She joined Arizona State University in 2008 as a faculty associate and became a full-time instructor in 2009. In May 2023, Mrs. Hawkinson retired from full-time teaching, and now teaches part-time while concentrating on research internationally.
Mrs. Hawkinson holds a master's degree in geology from SUNY-Binghamton. Her interest in geology focused on the interaction of human activities with the earth’s surface; specifically, urban centers and rivers, including governmental response to increased stream flow and flood damage.
Mrs. Hawkinson also holds a master's degree in sociology from ASU. Her research is presently focused on social change as a result of the constant interaction between society and the natural environment. This research takes her internationally where she assists local governments with efforts in rewilding of forests.
Mrs. Hawkinson with her co-author published Social Change and Religious Faith (Kendall Hunt Publishing) in January 2021.

Cynthia Hawkinson has a wide range of research interests, including social change, human geography, religion, music, Latin American culture, human trafficking, and the relationship between science and society. These research interests have recently produced:
- a research paper entitled: "Witches and Exorcists: A Case Study of Socio-Economic Empowerment and Oppression in Post-Colonial Latin America", presented at the Diversity Caucus Conference of the History of Economic Thought, May 2021.
- a co-authored textbook entitled: "Social Change and Religious Faith", published by KendallHunt, January 2021.
- a co-authored research paper entitled: "A Multi-Disciplinary Analogy: From Jazz to the Social Sciences", published by Journal of Liberal Arts and Humanities, May 2020, presented at the American Association of Behavior and Social Sciences Confreence, January 2020.
