Robby Carrillo

Robby Carrillo is a Phoenix-based drummer, educator, and bandleader known for his dynamic time feel, stylistic versatility, and deep commitment to jazz education and community engagement. He is currently the Assistant Professor of Drum Set at Arizona State University, and also the director of the ASU Latin Jazz Ensemble. Robby also teaches drum set at Mesa Community College.

Carrillo holds a Master of Music in Jazz Performance from Arizona State University, where he studied with legendary drummer Lewis Nash. His formal training, combined with extensive professional experience, informs a musical approach grounded in the jazz tradition while remaining flexible, interactive, and forward-looking.

An active performer throughout the Southwest, Carrillo regularly appears with leading jazz artists and ensembles, and is a familiar presence at venues such as The Nash in downtown Phoenix and the Ravenscroft in Scottsdale. 

As an educator, Carrillo is especially focused on individualized instruction, helping students develop strong time, touch, dynamics, and stylistic awareness. His teaching integrates transcription, recording technology, and consistent live performance, encouraging students to absorb the language and history of jazz while cultivating their own musical voice. He is a strong advocate for jam sessions and real-world performance as essential components of artistic growth.

Beyond the classroom and bandstand, Carrillo is an active contributor to the Phoenix jazz community through performances, clinics, adjudication, and outreach, remaining committed to building meaningful musical experiences that connect tradition, education, and community.
