Sue Dahl-Popolizio has more than 25 years of experience practicing as a licensed occupational therapist (OT) and a board-certified hand therapist and upper extremity specialist (CHT). She has practiced in multiple medical settings (inpatient intensive care, acute care, sub- acute care and intensive rehabilitation), as well as in out-patient and home care settings, including an interprofessional primary care team providing healthcare to the homeless population in Phoenix, Arizona. She is currently Program Director for the Integrated Behavioral Health Program, which houses the Doctor of Behavioral Health Program at Arizona State University (ASU).
Her current research includes inter-professional collaborative projects to increase the presence of occupational therapy on integrated primary care teams. She has completed research on the readiness of primary care providers, and OTs, for including OTs on primary care interprofessional teams. She has completed a data analysis needs assessment to determine the most common issues presenting to primary care and the existing OT interventions to address them. She has published outcomes of a collaboration with a community partner (primary care office) on a population health management approach to improving self-management of diabetes through an OT-led interprofessional intervention. With this project she identified barriers to implementing this approach, and potential solutions to breach these barriers. She recently completed another community partner collaboration in which she and her team identified how OTs are being used in primary care, and the codes that received reimbursement for occupational therapy services. She is in the second phase of this project which is assessing the effectiveness of OTs in addressing chronic condition management in primary care patients. She is a leader in the movement to integrate occupational therapy services in the primary care setting and continues to publish and present her findings on this topic. She received her Doctor of Behavioral Health degree from Arizona State University, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Occupational Therapy from Quinnipiac University and her bachelor's degree in physical education from California State University San Bernardino. Dr. Dahl-Popolizio is the 2020 recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award for the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University. She currently serves as the Legislative Chair of the Arizona Occupational Therapy Association.
