Dr. Afsaneh Nahavandi received her Ph.D. in social psychology from
the University of Utah in 1983. Her areas of specialty are
leadership, teams, and culture. She is the author of four books:
“Organizational culture in the management of mergers” was
published in 1993, “Organizational Behavior: The
person-organization fit” published in 1999, and “The art
and science of leadership” published by Prentice Hall. The
book, now in its sixth edition, is one of the best selling leadership
textbooks in the U.S. "Ancient Leadership Wisdom" was
published in 2012. She has published articles in journals such as
the
">Academy of Management
Review , the
">Journal of Management
Studies, and the
">Academy of Management
Executive. Her article about teams won the
">Academy of Management
Executive’s 1994 Best Article of the year award.
She has presented her most recent work about ancient philosophy and
leadership at national and international conferences and has published
book chapters about the topic. She is a speaker at many conferences
and events about the topic of leadership and culture. She joined ASU
in 1987 after teaching at Northeastern University in Boston for four
years. She is currently professor of Public Administration and
Associate Dean of the College of Public Programs. She was previously
associate dean of at ASU’s University College, the director of
the University College at the West campus of ASU and director of the
MBA program in the School of Management at ASU’s West campus, as
well as the faculty senate president for that campus. She the 2001 ASU
Parents Association Professor of the Year and a Fellow of the
Distinguished Teaching Academy, recipient of the 1992 and 2001 ASU
West Achievement in Teaching Award, and recipient of the ASU Faculty
Women’s Association 1997 Achievement in Gender Equity Award.
