Erica Grodin leads the Clinical and Translational Addiction Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University, where she investigates the biobehavioral mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of addictive disorders to inform the development of more effective, mechanism-based interventions.
Dr. Grodin's work uses a clinical and translational neuroscience approach that integrates neuroimaging, experimental medicine, psychoneuroimmunology, and the gut–brain axis. Together, this work illustrates how integrating brain, behavior, and peripheral biology can advance a mechanistic understanding of addiction.
Ongoing projects include:
- characterization of the microbiome-gut-brain axis in individuals with alcohol use disorder
- linking peripheral inflammation and neural processing in individuals with alcohol use disorder
- sleep, emotion-regulation, and alcohol choices

My current research addresses the following questions: (1) What can behavioral and neural markers of addiction vulnerability tell us about addiction neurobiology? and (2) How can psychoneuroimmunology and microbiology inform our understanding of addiction? The goal of this work is to inform therapeutic development for alcohol and substance use disorders through clinical neuroscience. My research is founded on the understanding that alcohol and substance use disorders are disorders that maladaptively impact the brain, the body, and their interconnection, and by understanding the underlying (neuro)biology, we can develop better treatments for alcohol and substance use disorders.
Current research projects include:
- characterization of the microbiome-gut-brain axis in individuals with alcohol use disorder
- linking peripheral inflammation and neural processing in individuals with alcohol use disorder
- sleep, emotion-regulation, and alcohol choices
