Dean T. Barker is Vice President of User Experience for Optum, a UnitedHealth Group business and leading supplier of healthcare software. He has over two decades of experience in software design and consulting. He is an editor and author of ISO standards for software quality and usability and has co-authored a book on speech user interfaces. He has also written for many industry magazines, including Enterprise Development Magazine, Visions Magazine, and Quirks Marketing Research Review. Mr. Barker holds a B.A. in Business Management and Communications and a M.S. in Software Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
He previously taught the graduate course Software Engineering 5115: Graphical User Interface Design and Evaluation in the Master of Science in Software Engineering program within the University of Minnesota Software Engineering Center (UMSEC). He has also been a regular invited lecturer for the course Systems Engineering 645.651 Integrating Humans and Technology in the Engineering for Professionals graduate program in Systems Engineering at The Whiting School of Engineering.
He currently teaches the undergraduate course Human Systems Engineering 325 Human-Computer Interaction at Arizona State University and is a member of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Human Systems Engineering program Industry Advisory Board (IAB).
