Scotty D. Craig is an associate professor of human systems engineering within The Polytechnic School of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Dr. Craig serves as the ASU Learning Engineering Institute's Director, Research and Evaluation and as Director of the ASU Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative Partnership Lab. Dr. Craig is a learning engineer with expertise in cognitive science, design science, and the science of learning (specifically learning technology). He has contributions at the intersection of psychology, education, and technology within the areas of multimedia learning, virtual environments, as well as development and evaluation of learning technology within laboratory and applied settings. Dr. Craig is currently the graduate chair for the Human Systems Engineering Program and the University Senate Past President of the Polytechnic Campus and member of the ASU University Academic Council.
Dr. Craig has established two active labs while at Arizona State University. He is director of the Cognitive-Based Applied Learning Technology (CoBALT) Lab which conducts cutting edge research at the intersection of human cognition, technology, and the learning sciences which can provide solutions to real world problems within education and training. He is also director of the ASU Advanced Distributed Learning Lab, a collaboration with the US Department of Defense and US Allies to improve education, training and cooperation. Current projects examine virtual humans for learning and training, identification of best practices for eLearning, Evaluation of mobile learning technology, and interactive mixed reality systems for medical training.
His publications related to the aforementioned disciplines are extensive with career contributions comprising over 150 primary publications (e.g., journal articles, proceedings, book chapters). He has edited three books: "Readings in Training and Simulation," Vol. 2 with Dee Andrews (2015, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society),"End-User Considerations for Educational Technology Design" with Rod Roscoe and Ian Douglas (2017, IGI Global) and "Tutoring and Intelligent Tutoring Systems" (2018, Nova Science) and organized five journal special issues. He has published multiple reports with the U. S. DoD identifying best practices for advance distributed learning (online learning augmented with technology).
Dr. Craig has three active funded research projects with a forth service project. Dr. Craig (PI) received a $1.5M contract from the DOD - ARMY with the DEVCOM Soldier Center to build an immersive environment for team training. Dr. Craig is also a Co-PI on the WaterSIMmersive project ($2M) which will build a dynamic museum exhibit to educate rural and tribal communities on issues related to water use in Arizona. Dr. Craig is Co-PI on a contract from DOD-ARMY: Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA), Virtual Insomnia Patients (VIPs) to Accelerate Dissemination of Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Insomnia. This $5M proposal will build an artificially intelligent virtual patient to train clinicians in bet practices for insomnia. Dr Craig is also leading a collaborative group of tenure track and career faculty and ASU staff in an initiative to increase enrollment from the east valley into programs in The Polytechnic School of the Ira A Fulton Schools of Engineering. This program will reach out to stakeholders at local middle school and high schools school (e.g., administrators, educators, and students at as well as parents) to understand students' knowledge gaps and barriers related to their path toward college. The project will build connections and partnerships to seek solutions.
