Dr. Jan Schipper is a wildlife ecologist and conservation scientist with over 30 years of research experience, primarily in Central and South America, Hawaii, Philippines and along the US/Mexico borderlands. He has conducted applied research and developed conservation and management projects across a wide variety of threatened species, especially focusing on population recovery goals, non-invasive monitoring techniques and connectivity science. Long term projects include 1) evaluating the importance of conservation corridors for mammal dispersal and movement, 2) developing deterrents for illegal poaching, 3) creating technology to monitor species visually and acoustically, 4) monitoring the effectiveness of protected areas at conserving target species and 5) developing innovative conservation tools for jaguar (Panthera onca) and other area sensitive species. In Costa Rica he is working with the park service to develop acoustic monitoring tools to detect and report illegal hunting within protected areas, as part of a larger project to protect, restore and reconnect La Amistad International Park and Corcovado National Park. This interdisciplinary project brings together researchers, managers and local communities to help wildlife populations navigate a human-dominated landscape to reconnect isolated jaguar populations. In Arizona, we are evaluating how surface water (perennial waterways) and the dwindling riparian habitat it supports can reconnect habitats across a desert landscape. Additional interests include investigating carnivore impacts on trophic cascades, acoustic ecology, canopy highways for arboreal mammals and developing and improving upon non-invasive survey techniques. Jan is also a research associate with the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo and a senior researcher with the Sierra to Sea Institute/ProCAT International.
