Ida Malian is the associate dean of academic systems and professor of special education in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. She has served as associate director of education, associate vice provost for faculty development, director of grants, associate director of research for the PRIME (Practice, Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education) Center and chair of the Department of Special Education at ASU. Prior to coming to ASU she was associate director of the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and assistant professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a joint appointment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center at Meyer Children’s Rehabilitation Institute. She was also director of educational training at Children’s Psychiatric Hospital at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Professor Malian has served as principal investigator (PI) on numerous grants of national significance. She was coordinator of The Arizona Follow Along Project, which followed students with disabilities to post secondary transitions. She has been involved with the Phi Delta Kappa National Student at Risk Project. Professor Malian has also served as a hearing officer and mediator for special education disputes in California and Arizona. She serves as editor on top-tiered practitioner special education journals and has written numerous books and articles on topics ranging from the special education law, co-teaching to bullying and disabilities. Her scholarly focus is on the efficacy of inclusive practices. Currently, she is involved with a national study of paraeducators in inclusive classrooms and the efficacy of co-teaching for student achievement. Most recently she was appointed by the Arizona Board of Education to the Special Education Advisory Panel, which she serves as vice-chair.
