Professor Balven engages in research spans the micro-macro divide and is largely focused on socially and ethically oriented behaviors from the individual to the firm level. Areas such as unethical behavior, entrepreneurship, feedback, and corporate social responsibility are included in her research repertoire. Further, her research has appeared in management journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Human Resource Management Review, and Academy of Management Perspectives.
Professor Balven teaches a range of classes within the Department of Management & Entrepreneurship including Leadership, Collaborative Team Skills, and Organizational Behavior. She has presented her teaching methodology in conferences such as the Academy of Management Conference. These presentations include various teaching-related topics including honesty in academic writing, promoting and managing civil discourse in management education, artificial intelligence in the classroom, and tools for the empowerment of graduate students.
As an active member of various scholarly communities, Professor Balven is the current chair of the Academy of Management Ethics Education Committee, a committee that serves the Academy of Management.
Prior to joining academia, Professor Balven worked in the energy sector for an electric utility company for over 5 years and also worked at the World Trade Center.
