Hoffman is an award-winning architect and educator who has practiced and taught at leading institutions in the United States. From 1986-1998 he was head of the Department of Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cranbrook where he introduced conceptually driven, site-specific installations as part of an architectural curriculum, documented in Architecture Studio, Rizzoli Publishers. The experience of these material explorations led to a series of design-building projects on the historic Cranbrook Campus. During this period Hoffman also served as the Cranbrook Campus Architect, assisting in the design and implementation of a campus plan including buildings and structures by Steven Holl, Raphael Moneo, Peter Rose, Todd Williams, Billie Tsein, and Juhani Pallasmma. In 2000, Hoffman moved to Phoenix Arizona where he began teaching at ASU. In 2003, along with Christopher Alt and Christiana Moss, he founded Studio Ma, an award-winning architectural practice known for its contextual and environmentally sensitive designs. Significant projects include a new graduate housing campus for Princeton University, renovations to the ASU Student Union and mid-century campus residential tower, and a major addition to the campus recreation center. Urban projects include a series of urban townhouse infill projects and the Downtown Phoenix Urban Form Project in collaboration with Dyett and Bhatia. Hoffman currently coordinates the online MArch program for ASU.
