Aliya completed her undergraduate degree in biological anthropology at University of California, San Diego, where she specialized in 3D imaging and visualization of cultural heritage sites for research and public outreach. She completed a M.A. in anthropology (bioarchaeology) at Arizona State University before heading to Athens, Greece, to conduct bioarchaeological research with the support of a Fulbright Fellowship. Aliya is now back in Tempe, Arizona, working on her PhD in sociocultural anthropology. She studies barriers to inclusion in STEM graduate education and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on early career researchers.

Research Interests
I study exclusionary practices that create barriers for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in academia. Specifically, I examine the intersections of racism, heteropatriarchy, and colonialism in the origins and current configurations of anthropology. I explore how whiteness is reproduced through disciplinary cultures and practices that shape undergraduate and graduate education in order to reimagine higher education as a decolonial, antiracist, and equitable space for community and collective action.
