Roland has extensive Board experience having had the role of Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Audit Committee Chair and executive and non-executive director for publicly listed and private companies. He currently has two Board roles as chairman working with startup company CEOs both ranked in Inc. Magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America. He is a member of the Foresight Coaching Partnership, an organization that coaches CEOs and senior executives and has been an independent Research Fellow for Accenture’s Institute for High Performance.
Roland has presented at national and international forums on topics relating to shareholder value creation and corporate reporting with an emphasis on intangibles reporting including those organized by the United Nations, the OECD, MITI (Japan) and the AICPA. A paper on corporate reporting he co-authored won the Outstanding Paper Award for the Journal of Intellectual Capital in 2008. A paper on the use of TSR as a performance measure and its use in long term incentive compensation published in the Rotman International Journal of Pension Management was in the top ten download list for Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN) in 2012.
Roland has degrees from various Australian universities; a B. Agricultural Economics, a M. Commerce Marketing (Honors) and a Dip. Treasury Management. He has a PhD in Strategic Management (minor Marketing) from Purdue University, winning the GE/Strategic Management Society Award for Outstanding Research for his dissertation. He has a Fulbright Award and received the John W. Teets Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching at ASU in 2017.
He is a past Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and in the U.S., a past Member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and a past Certified Fraud Examiner.
Prior to joining ASU, Roland engaged in advisory work through his own company focusing on strategic growth management and in particular on strategy and structure issues which require identifying, measuring, valuing and managing and reporting on the organization’s value drivers.
Typical projects focused on the determining the drivers of value creation and value recognition by investors, and link between investor outcome performance metrics like TSR, CFROIC and ROIC and enterprise value expressed in terms of current value and future value and the drivers of value in terms of archetypal strategies – growth, scale, operations and finance. The identification of valued strategies and their value drivers (Value Driver Trees) leads to an assessment of their competitive sustainability and generally, to an evaluation of both strategy and structure. The formulation and practical implementation of key value creation changes was central to the firm’s advisory work. A number of the tools and analytic procedures his firm developed to gain insight into market valuations have been patented. A complement to the firm’s advisory work has been in voluntary corporate reporting with projects for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD).
