Jason is researching the vulnerability of urban populations to flooding due to extreme rainfall events and climate change. His primary research focus is on how urban wetlands interact with drainage infrastructure to affect city-wide flood exposure in Valdivia, Chile. He combines field measurements of wetland hydrology with drainage system and urban land use models to provide decision support to citizens and city planners. He has also helped to develop and deploy a model for topography-based flood modeling, based on the “blue spot” model by Dr. Thomas Balstrøm, for flood risk assessment in Hermosillo, Mexico and Phoenix, Arizona. Additionally, he is a co-creator and cohost of the UREx SRN podcast, Future Cities.
