Deborah N. Losse was named dean of humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in May 2004. In that role she provided vision and leadership for the humanities division of the college until her retirement in 2010.
A professor of French, Losse previously served for six years as associate dean of academic programs in the ASU Graduate College and three years as chair of the department of languages and literatures (now the School of International Letters and Cultures). She has twice directed the ASU program abroad in Lille, France. Losse also served as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Katsina, Nigeria. She has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the U.S. Department of Education and the Pew Charitable Trusts. She is a chevalier in the Order of Academic Palms and Emeritus Professor at ASU.

Losse continues to research and write in the area of early modern French literature. Recent publications include: Montaigne and Brief Narrative Form (Palgrave Macmillan 2013); Syphilis: Medicine, Metphor, and Religious Conflict (The Ohio State University Press 2015); and forthcoming at Peter Lang, Volery and Venery in the French Wars of Religion.
