Jillian Joiner is a Ph.D. student in the Comparative Culture and Language program at Arizona State University. She holds degrees in Economics and French Language and Literature. She has taught introductory French language courses and an introductory comparative culture course. In her research, she examines how the politics of art affect the ethics of interacting with art as a spectator. Her research interests include European and Francophone film, virtual realities in film and video games, socioeconomic and political approaches to film and art, narrative embodiment, experimental film mediums, visuality and de/alienation in film, and posthumanism in film. Her ongoing research includes examination of self-reflexivity in virtual spaces, caring and uncaring through proximity and distance in virtual reality films, posthuman transformations and mutations in virtual realities, as well as an examination of experimental or post-cinema virtual urban spaces as the abject. She is a founding member of the Comparative Culture and Language Symposium at ASU and was a CLAS Student Leader in 2020.
