Katherine Bynum is Assistant Professor of history in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies. Her research focuses on the Black and Brown freedom struggles, the carceral state and oral history. She is currently revising her manuscript Unite and Be Free: The Formation of a Multiracial Coalition against Police Violence in Dallas.
Bynum has received several accolades documenting her success as a scholar. She was the 2022-2023 recipient of the Summerfield G. Roberts Fellow for the Study of Texas History at the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University. As a graduate student, she received the Sara Jackson Graduate Student Award from the Western History Association in 2019 and the recipient of the Mary M. Hughes Research Fellowship in Texas History from the Texas State Historical Association in 2018. Bynum is currently a recipient of the Institute for Humanities Research Award for the 2023-2024 academic year here at ASU.
Bynum published a chapter entitled "Civil Rights in the City of Hate: Black and Brown Organizing against Police Brutality in Texas, 1967-1987," for the edited anthology, Civil Rights in Black and Brown: Histories of Liberation and Struggle in Texas (UT Press, 2021). She and the other contributors received the 2022 OHA Book Award based on their contributions as both researchers for the Civil Rights in Black and Brown Oral History Project and as authors of the anthology. Bynum has also written numerous book reviews for prominent academic journals, including the Journal of American History, the American Historical Review, and the Southwestern Historical Quarterly.
