D.L. Perea was born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area until his family moved to the Deep South in the late 80s. D.L. lived in Mississippi for over 20 years where he became a documentary filmmaker and journalist. For over seven years, D.L. was the primary video content producer for Pizza TV and its parent company, PMQ Pizza Magazine. He also served as an embedded reporter for international pizza competitions around the world, and as a play-by-play commentator for pizza-related alternative sporting events broadcast on ESPN and ESPN3.
D.L. Perea currently works as a marketing copywriter and content specialist for the financial industry while also pursuing graduate studies in journalism at Harvard University Extension School.

Eligible for the contest were short films shown at the festival over the past 12 years. "West of Elvis" was chosen by popular vote.
