Michael Madson is an assistant professor of technical communication and user experience. He is the founder and organizer of the annual Conference on Teaching Writing in the Health Professions (WIHPcon), as well as the current faculty lead of Sun Devils in Seoul.
His research explores how communication practices contribute to health and wellness, focusing on three key areas: drug safety (especially opioids and cannabis), wayfinding in healthcare facilities, and the training of healthcare professionals. He edited the collection Teaching writing in the health professions (Routledge, 2022), which brings together more than 30 professionals from medicine, nursing, allied health, social work, rhetoric, and technical communication. He followed up with a second collection, Composing health literacies (Routledge, 2023), which grapples with the expanded conceptualization of "health literacy" in the Healthy People 2030 program.
His recent journal articles have appeared in Technical Communication Quarterly, Technical Communication, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, HERD: Health Environments Research and Design, Medical Teacher, Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, and Nurse Educator, among other venues.
Before coming to Arizona State, Michael was a full-time faculty member at the Medical University of South Carolina, teaching writing to students across the health professions. He has also taught at the University of Minnesota, Utah State University, the Harvard Extension School, Yonsei University, and Far East University.
