Derek Wilson is a dedicated advocate for student success and community impact, currently serving as a Student Success Coach at Arizona State University’s Luke Air Force Base office. In this role, he provides personalized guidance to military-connected students, helping them navigate academic pathways, university resources, and career opportunities. His commitment to education and student empowerment ensures that learners receive the support they need to achieve their academic and professional goals.
Previously, Derek served as a Student Success Advocate at ASU’s Pat Tillman Veterans Center, where he played a key role in championing the success of over 20,000 military-affiliated students. He facilitated access to critical resources, developed community-building initiatives, and created networking opportunities to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Arizona State University, graduating summa cum laude as the Outstanding Graduate of the ASU School of Social Work in December 2024. He also earned associate degrees in Social Work and Criminal Justice from Glendale Community College and the Community College of the Air Force, respectively. His expertise spans team collaboration, problem-solving, and strategic planning, with a strong dedication to service and student achievement.
A retired U.S. Air Force veteran, Derek’s leadership and dedication have been recognized through numerous accolades, including two ASU Pitchfork Awards for Emerging Student Leader and Student Worker of the Year. He was also honored as a Spirit of Service Scholar, a Congressman Ed Pastor Civic Leadership Award recipient, and a Veteran Scholar. As a student leader, he founded the Student Veterans Organization at ASU and was inducted into multiple honor societies, including Phi Alpha, Omicron Delta Kappa, Tau Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Pi.
