Dr. B. William Silcock is a scholar and leading global innovator in journalism education. Named to the Emeritus faculty at Arizona State University in December 2020, Bill is the former Assistant Dean for Research and International Programs at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Curator of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship program at Arizona State University. He also served as the Director of Cronkite Global Initiatives leading projects and conducting workshops in over 25 nations. Bill has conducted journalism and leadership workshops five times in the past four years in three Pakistan cities, Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi, A higher education professional, Silcock was twice was selected as a Fulbright Scholar (Ireland, 1992, Sweden, 1997).
He also directed the doctoral program at the Cronkite School for three years. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed academic research articles and is the co-author of two textbooks. "News Now: Visual Storytelling in the Digital Age" (second new edition, 2020) has gained wide adoption as a digital media textbook. Silcock lectures widely on leadership, digital journalism, and ethics topics.
With a passion for international broadcast news, "Dr. Bill" as he is known around the halls of the Cronkite School, trains journalists globally; most recently in Dubai (2019), Zagreb (2019) Pakistan (2018), Albania (2018), Croatia (2018), Serbia (2014), Sri Lanka (2011), Jordan (2011), and Kyrgyzstan (2010) for the U.S. State Department and private companies. He's conducted over 50 workshops in the last decade for journalists on such topics as leadership, news, social media, and ethics.
An author, gifted teacher, and academic leader, Silcock builds bridges across cultures. Experienced as an award-winning documentary producer, “Backstage At A Presidential debate: The Press, the Pundits and the People” aired on PBS stations, won a 2004 juried faculty Award of Excellence from the Broadcast Education Association and the Houston International Film Festival's Gold Award of Excellence.
An avid vinyl record collector with over 10,000 singles and albums in his collection interviewing Van Morrison is high on his bucket list. He and his bride Angela enjoy tracing family history and collecting emerging new artists working in oils and watercolors.
