Ehsan Dehghan-Niri is an associate professor in the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks at Arizona State University. He directs the Intelligent Structures and Nondestructive Evaluation (ISNDE) Lab at ASU. Dehghan-Niri’s main research interests include bio-inspired acoustic sensing, acoustic-based testing and monitoring methods for inspection of infrastructures and mechanical systems, robotic inspection, and in-situ quality control of advanced manufacturing.
He received his doctorate from the University at Buffalo, which featured research focused on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive Evaluation/Testing (NDE/T). He then took up a position for two years as a NDE/T scientist at Materials and Processes Engineering in General Electric. He is the author of more than 30 scientific journal publications, 33 conference publications or presentations, and 13 U.S. and European pending and approved patents.
In 2021, he received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. For his contributions to field of NDE/T, he also received a national award “Young NDT Professional Award” from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. His current research is supported by NSF, DOE, DOD, NASA, NIH, DOT, and several industrial companies.

Our research efforts at Intelligent Structures and Nondestructive Evaluation (ISNDE) blend theoretical, experimental, and practical approaches, focusing on fundamental research while addressing real-world challenges. We strive to contribute to the fields of material evaluation, structural inspection, and advanced manufacturing quality control through our interdisciplinary research endeavors.
Our research areas at ISNDE encompass three main thrusts:
- Bio-inspired acoustic sensing and monitoring: We delve into the fascinating world of bioacoustics including animal hearing and apply our findings to nondestructive testing. By understanding the fundamental characteristics that contribute to exceptional hearing in biological systems engaged in foraging activities, we develop advanced techniques for material evaluation and structural inspection.
- Robotic inspection: Our team integrates acoustic sensing modalities into robotic platforms, creating sophisticated multitasking systems for inspecting various infrastructures. This includes pipelines, power plants, electrical grids, and underwater structures. By leveraging the knowledge gained from bio-inspired research, we enhance the capabilities of these robots in detecting and evaluating potential issues.
- Advanced manufacturing quality control: We extend our expertise in acoustic sensing and ultrasonic testing to real-time quality control in advanced manufacturing, including additive manufacturing processes. By leveraging our understanding of acoustic properties, we pioneer innovative methods to ensure high-quality production outcomes.
