Maggie is a non-traditional, First-generation student who understands the many barriers these types of students go through. Maggie is a proud Salvadorian and speaks Spanish. She likes to collect rocks and sand from places she visits and she loves the beach more than anything in this world.
Academic Background
Maggie is currently completing a Doctorate in Health Sciences at A.T. Still University. She has a Master’s of Education in Higher Education and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Community Health from Utah Valley University. Maggie is also a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), a Certified Phlebotomist Technician (CPT), and a certified Peer Leader through The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), developed by Stanford University’s Patient Education Resource Center.
Professional background
Maggie is an instructor and course coordinator in the Baccalaureate Health Programs for the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University. She teaches the courses Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System, Culture and Health, Fundamentals of Community Health, and Ethics for the Health Care Professionals. Through these courses, students learn about health care ethics, the United States health care system context, and how diverse cultural and ethnic groups approach health and illness according to their beliefs and practices.
In the community setting, Maggie has taught health workshops through the Diabetes and Chronic Pain/Diseases Management Program, which is part of the Utah County Health Department. These workshops are meant to teach patients about health literacy, techniques to deal with symptoms of chronic conditions, and emotional problems. Patients are also taught how to better communicate with their healthcare providers and how to find the proper resources to manage their chronic illnesses. The ultimate goal of these workshops is to help the patients gain confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
