Michelle Sherman has worked as a litigation attorney for over 25 years in a large law firm, as an assistant public defender, and as a senior corporate counsel for Farmers Insurance. Michelle looks forward to bringing this professional experience to her courses at ASU.
Working full time as an attorney, Michelle also knew that she wanted to be in the classroom teaching. Michelle started out teaching trial advocacy skills to attorneys over 20 years ago, and then transitioned to being an adjunct professor at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism teaching courses in the Public Relations program. At USC, Michelle taught graduate and undergraduate classes in Communications Law and Ethics, Research and Analysis, and Advanced Strategic Public Relations (a capstone class for PR majors). As part of the capstone PR class, students received guidance on resume writing, cover letters, interview skills, and some "outside the box" job hunting skills.
Michelle first connected with USC as a result of the blog writing and speaking she was doing around social media legal issues. Michelle helped launch one of the first law firm blogs on the use of social media by businesses and their employees. For the Am Law 100 law firm where she was working at the time, Michelle also managed their social media accounts.
In 2015, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) approached Michelle about writing a book on the use of social media in litigation and trial. This book, "Winning with Social Media: A Desktop Guide for Lawyers Using Social Media in Litigation and Trial" was published in 2017.
