NIH R34HL170819-01: Daniels (PI) and Medina-Marino (co-PI) 08/2023-07/2026. Determining the feasibility of Coach Mpilo for men on TB Treatment in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Men are less likely to complete TB treatment, contributing to their reduced life expectancy in South Africa. To address the paucity of interventions to improve men’s TB outcomes, the proposed project will determine the feasibility of Coach Mpilo for men and assess secondary outcomes on treatment completion and viral suppression among HIV co-infected. Findings will provide essential information to support a larger effectiveness study in this setting.
NIMH 1R34 MH125790-01A1: Daniels (PI) 03/2021-02/2024. Tailoring Healthy Relationships to Improve HIV Treatment Outcomes for MSM in South Africa. Utilizing human centered design with guidance from a community advisory board, tailor and adapt the evidence-based intervention, Healthy Relationships, into a video-conference format for GBMSM living with HIV in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Deploy qualitative and survey measures tailoring. Afterward, conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess feasibility of the tailored intervention, renamed Speaking Out and Allying Relationships (SOAR), and collect mediators for viral suppression. Findings will inform a larger efficacy trial of the SOAR intervention.
NIH Administrative Supplement: Daniels (PI) 08/2022-02/2024. Tailoring SOAR to improve HIV outcomes for transgender women in Eastern Cape, South Africa (3R34MH125790). Building on findings from the parent award and preliminary research conducted by Daniels in South Africa, tailor the SOAR intervention for transgender women living with HIV in Eastern Cape. Then, using a one-arm pilot test, determine SOAR feasibility for transgender women in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
NIAID 1R21 AI163977-01: Daniels (MPI) and Medina-Marino (MPI). 08/2021-07/2024. Measuring Real-Time Influences of Mental and Tangible Resources on Men’s TB Treatment Lapses and Adherence Behaviors. To develop an integrated mEMA-MEMS platform that utilizes Wisepill and REDCap for delivery of near real-time surveys to assess factors influencing TB treatment dosing. Afterward, conduct a 6- month pilot test of the platform to assess usability and feasibility to inform a larger observational study of TB treatment adherence.
