Long Bio

Randy J. Virden is the Director of the Parks and Recreation Management Program in the School of Community Resources & Development at Arizona State University. He was the founding Director of the School of Community Resources & Development and the former Chair of the Department of Recreation Management and Tourism. He has also served as graduate coordinator and been a member of the faculty in the natural resource recreation/tourism program for over twenty years. Dr. Virden earned his doctorate from the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University.

Research Interests

His primary areas of academic interest include the application of social science knowledge to natural resource planning and policy, recreation and tourism behavior, and visitor management. Dr. Virden has been the principle or co-principle investigator on over $1,225,000 in external grant funding over the past 20 years. Research projects include grants with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Arizona State Parks, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Phoenix. His publications appear in Leisure Sciences, Journal of Parks and Recreation Administration, Tourism Geographies, Environment and Behavior, SCOLE and Society and Natural Resources.
