Dr. Schultz earned a PhD in History at ASU in 2011 with doctoral fields in Public History, the American West and 20th Century United States history. Her dissertation, "History and Historic Preservation in San Diego Since 1945: Civic Identity in America's Finest City," explored transformations in civic identity and the evolution and maturing of historic preservation in San Diego after WWII. Her research interests include WWI, Gilded Age/Progressive Era, urban history and civic identity formation, the American West, historic preservation, women's history and documentary film.
Dr. Schultz grew up Libertyville, IL & has lived in West Bend, WI, Los Angeles, Simi Valley CA, Tucson & in San Diego. In her first career she worked as an internal medicine & cardiac nurse for nearly 18 years before deciding to fulfill a lifelong dream of teaching college History and working on historical documentary films.
She studied Television/Film at San Diego City College and served in the United States Naval Reserve 1991-1999 in San Diego before transferring to the University of Arizona where she earned a BA in Media Arts with a minor in History. She also holds two Master's degrees from the University of Arizona, one in History and another in Information Resources and Library Science.
She has three daughters, two sons, and nine grandchildren. Both of her sons are ASU Alums so Dr. Schultz has also been a Sun Devil Parent! Dr. Schultz was born and raised in Libertyville, Illinois and enjoys doing geneaology research in Illinois, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Vermont and Canada and relishes reading, ceramics & building 1" scale doll houses.
