Bothwell Piason is a doctoral candidate in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. His research sits at the intersection of corrections and health, victimology, justice-involved populations, and international criminology, with a particular focus on how criminal legal systems shape experiences of health, victimization, and social support, among underserved populations. His work has examined women’s incarceration, healthcare access among system-involved populations, victimization trajectories, Indigenous women and family violence, and community-engaged approaches to justice research. Bothwell holds a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Sciences from Illinois State University, where he received the James L. Fisher Outstanding Thesis Award, and has academic training in criminology and criminal justice, international relations, monitoring and evaluation, and women’s and gender studies. His scholarship is informed by global perspectives shaped by lived, academic, and community engagement experiences across Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mozambique, and the United States. His research has been published in outlets including the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology and Temida. In 2024, he received a scholarship from the National Institute of Justice to attend the National Research Conference, and in 2026, he was invited to present research on women’s perceptions of access to justice in prisons and jails at the NGO CSW Forum at the United Nations in New York. His broader goal is to produce policy-relevant and community-engaged scholarship that advances understanding of justice, health, and victimization within local and global criminal justice systems.
