With over 80 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 19, Dr. Akhter's research focuses on critical areas such as breast cancer genetics, neurodegenerative disorders, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging infectious diseases. His work includes groundbreaking studies on the role of genetic polymorphisms, exosomes in vascular/neurological disorders, and the impact of environmental toxins on immune regulation.
Dr. Akhter’s contributions to neuroscience include the development of innovative models for traumatic optic neuropathy and subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as elucidating molecular pathways underlying neuroinflammation and stroke recovery. He is the principal author of high-impact research, including studies on perfluorocarbon oxygen therapy and endothelial deletion of complement C3a receptor in neuroprotection. His academic endeavors have been recognized at esteemed conferences, such as the International Stroke Conference and the ARVO Annual Meeting.
A dedicated mentor, Dr. Akhter has guided numerous undergraduate and graduate students in genetics, molecular biology, and clinical research. His students have presented at prestigious events, contributing to the understanding of gene-disease associations in conditions like thyroid cancer, osteosarcoma, and endometriosis.
Dr. Akhter’s teaching philosophy centers on fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and inclusivity. He has a rich teaching portfolio, covering courses in General Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Evolution, Microbiology, and Molecular Chemistry at leading institutions worldwide. His commitment to student development is evident in his innovative pedagogical approaches and efforts to tailor learning experiences to diverse needs.
Currently an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, Dr. Akhter also serves as a mental health advocate and actively participates in community initiatives, including after-school tutoring programs. He is passionate about interdisciplinary collaborations, translating research into novel therapies, and empowering the next generation of scientists.
Dr. Akhter hold a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India, where he conducted doctoral research on the molecular analysis of the p21 gene in Indian female breast cancer patients under the mentorship of Professor S. A. Husain. This work laid a strong foundation for his research focus on cancer genetics and molecular pathophysiology.
In addition to his doctoral training, he has pursued postdoctoral research in neurodegenerative disorders, specializing in models of ischemic stroke, glaucoma, and traumatic optic neuropathy. His academic journey has provided a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and neuroscience, which continues to inform his teaching and research endeavors.
