Dr. James Parker is a scholar of environmental, colonial, African, and development history. He received his PhD in World History from Northeastern University, and his research has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed academic journals including History in Africa and The International Journal of African Historical Studies.
James' work studies the intersections of economic development and ecological damage in colonial Kenya, specifically analyzing how colonial authorities reconceptualized and rerouted water supplies in arid regions towards extractive industries, and away from indigenous communities. Given these research interests, he teaches and advises on African, development, and environmental studies as well as questions of power, imperialism, and anti-colonialism.
