John Jones joined ASU in 1990 after completing a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Texas at Austin. His work is in algebraic number theory. Early work centered around extra zeros and the mysterious L-invariant for Iwasawa L-functions associated to elliptic curves and abelian varieties. More recent research involves computations of number fields, local fields, and Artin representations. Results of these number theoretic computations have lasting value. Jones was one of the first mathematicians to disseminate this sort of result through the web.
In teaching, Jones has been at the forefront of several movements in the teaching of higher level mathematics: calculus reform, discovery-mode learning, and the development of a web-based homework system for grading math homework.
