Marina Cavichiolo Grochocki completed her doctorate in Classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2024. Her research interests include Greek and Latin poetry, Classics and the environmental humanities, and reception studies in Latin America. In addition to Latin language classes, Marina teaches courses on the Classical tradition and Greek and Roman mythology. In her teaching, Marina emphasizes how knowledge is never neutral and how ancient cultures can help us understand that today’s world is shaped by our beliefs and actions.
- Ph.D. Classics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2024
- M.A. Literary Studies, Universidade Federal do Paraná (Brazil)
- Bachelor's degree (Latin Literature and Portuguese with teacher training), Universidade Federal do Paraná (Brazil)
Marina Cavichiolo Grochocki specializes in Latin poetry, especially how the Romans shaped natural environments in literature to express socio-political power. Her research focuses on the representations of minoritized individuals and their interactions with or in nature. Instead of following the academic emphasis on the literary canon, Marina's research prioritizes ignored cultural forms that create the possibility for new subjectivities in antiquity and in modern times. Her current book project investigates epigrams that depict pastoral themes (from collections such as the Appendix Vergiliana and the Latin Anthology) and argues that poems deemed by readers as aesthetically “bad” depart from canonical authors to express innovative ideas and to enact their identities.
She is also working on a series of articles on natural imagery and identity, including projects on Pliny the Elder's plants and the late-antique Vandal poet Luxurius' animals.
