Megan McCaughan is a PhD Student in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, with a strong commitment to advancing global health through scientific discovery, humanitarian efforts, and effective science communication.
Her current research focuses on elucidating the cell death pathway known as necroptosis, and the interplay of innate immune evasion by viral pathogens.
In her role as Graduate Student Body President (GPSA), Megan passionately advocates for graduate students, focusing on key priorities such as affordability, sustainability, and wellness. More specifically to fight for higher stipends, comprehensive healthcare, and affordable housing options for graduate students while amplifying their voices. Megan also serves as a Teaching Professor where she teaches Inquiry and Advanced Inquiry with the Interplanetary Initiative.
Previously, as the Vice President of Internal Affairs of GPSA she oversaw all of the grant programs offered and is passionate about eliminating financial barriers to create equitable research and professional development opportunities for all graduate students. She previously served as co-chair of ASU's Health and Wellness Advisory Board where she championed issues affecting both students' mental and physical well-being. Before this, she also served as the Director of Research for GPSA from 2021-2022.
Before embarking on her PhD journey, Megan spent five years living in Peru, where she became fluent in Spanish, adding to her diverse skill set and global perspective.
