Md Ariful Islam is a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University and a Graduate Research Associate at ASU. He is also a Research Affiliate with Mayo Clinic in Arizona and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, currently on study leave.
His research lies at the intersection of biomedical signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, data science, and digital health. His current research focuses particularly on sleep health and sleep-disordered breathing, including multimodal physiological signal analysis, obstructive sleep apnea detection and characterization, cardiometabolic and respiratory risk assessment, and maternal-fetal autonomic physiology. He is interested in developing interpretable and clinically meaningful AI approaches that translate complex physiological and real-world health data into tools for disease detection, risk stratification, and personalized healthcare.
Beyond biomedical applications, his research experience spans intelligent systems, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, telecommunications, robotics, and machine-learning applications across interdisciplinary domains. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal and conference publications and has contributed to multiple externally and internally funded research projects as a principal investigator, co-principal investigator, and research collaborator.
Before beginning his Ph.D. at ASU, he served as a faculty member at the University of Dhaka and taught courses spanning electrical and electronic engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, robotics, computing, and related areas. His research and academic accomplishments have been recognized through several awards and fellowships, including the Qualcomm Fellowship, Fulton Fellowship, Barrett Electronic Materials Fellowship, ASU Graduate and Professional Student Association Outstanding Research Award, University of Dhaka Research Excellence Recognition, and the Bangladesh National Science and Technology Fellowship.

My current research focuses on the development and application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and biomedical signal processing methods for sleep and digital health. Major areas of ongoing research include:
- Multidimensional Sleep Health: Investigating polysomnography-derived sleep indices and their associations with cardiometabolic and respiratory health risks.
- Multimodal Obstructive Sleep Apnea Detection: Developing deep learning and multimodal physiological signal fusion approaches for the detection and characterization of obstructive sleep apnea.
- Longitudinal OSA Phenotyping: Investigating biochemical phenotypes, disease progression, and longitudinal changes in obstructive sleep apnea using interpretable machine learning and statistical approaches.
- Maternal-Fetal Sleep Physiology: Investigating associations between maternal sleep-disordered breathing and fetal heart rate variability to better understand maternal-fetal autonomic coupling during pregnancy.
- Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health: Using real-world clinical data to investigate the prevalence, progression, treatment utilization, and disparities associated with cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic conditions, including among patients with and survivors of cancer.
