Tracy Ortega is Director of the Civil Litigation Clinic and Associate Clinical Professor of Law at Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. She joined ASU Law faculty in 2025.
Professor Ortega came to ASU Law following six years at Pennsylvania State University. She was Supervising Attorney of the Family Law Clinic at Penn State Dickinson Law, and she also practiced with Student Legal Services. During her time at Penn State she taught Family Law, Children & the Law, and Poverty Law & Advocacy.
Prior to that, she did non-profit work for two years in Alameda County, California as a Registered Legal Aid Attorney representing primarily low-income and vulnerable populations. Professor Ortega also practiced in Kansas for several years where she was in private practice; Associate Litigation Counsel to the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts; and Managing Attorney of the Medical Legal Partnership at University of Kansas School of Law.
Professor Ortega has extensive civil litigation experience, primarily in the areas of family law, dependency law, and landlord/tenant law. She prides herself in her daily practice of trauma-informed lawyering and finds it to be one of the most useful tools in civil litigation practice.
She is a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association and Arizona Bar Association. She has held various leadership positions in the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Douglas County Bar Association, and Kansas Bar Association. She holds an active license in both Kansas and Pennsylvania, and law professor certification in Arizona.
