Brand is a military historian and political theorist who explores the relationship between war, religion, and constitutional politics. Brand teaches courses in history and political thought, spanning from the ancient Near East to the modern period. He also taught military history classes at the University of Texas-Austin, directed the History program in King’s College Politics, Philosophy, and Economics Program, and designed and directed the Politics, Philosophy, and History program at Cairn University. Brand is a former U.S. Army officer who served in combat with the 4th Infantry Division and is currently a reserve officer in the U.S. Navy. He received his Ph.D. from Baylor University and his MA in Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Brand’s publications focus on republicanism, citizen armies, and statesmanship. His first book, Killing for the Republic: Citizen-Soldiers and the Roman Way of War, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Interviews and popular versions of his academic work have appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, The Hill, Fox News, National Review, and Time, among others.
