After receiving a bachelor's in psychology from Boston College in 1971 and a master’s degree in counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1973, Richard Kinnier worked as a counselor for several years at Manhattan State Hospital and the Postgraduate Center in New York City. After he obtained a doctorate in counseling psychology from Stanford University in 1982, he accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Arizona State University. He served as the director of clinical training for the counseling psychology program from 2002–05. Since 1982, Professor Kinnier has taught 18 different courses and chaired about 40 doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. He has served on more than 180 dissertation and thesis committees. Kinnier has conducted research in several areas but his main interest has been on topics related to values clarification, decision making, and meaning in life. He has published about 70 articles, chapters, and books.
