Jimmy Kernan

Br. Jimmy Kernan, OFM is a PhD student in Sustainable Energy in the School of Sustainability and the College of Global Futures. I have an interest in studying the impacts of energy transitions in university and religious institutions, and the impacts on their surrounding communities in building a more just and sustainable future.

Br. Jimmy is a professed member of the Order of Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans. He is a member of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a coast-to-coast entity in the United States and parts of the Caribbean of the Order of Friars Minor. Throughout his life as a friar, he has lived and worked in many communities throughout the country, especially among the poor and marginalized, which inspires my work in just and sustainable community development.

Prior to beginning at ASU, Br. Jimmy worked as the Assistant Director of the Laudato Si' Center for Integral Ecology at Siena University in Loudonville, NY. This center's aim to bring forth the vision of Pope Francis's landmark document Laudato Si' (2015) was his introduction to academia and the work of building a more sustainable community. His work in research for the center, and in the classroom helps him bring a holistic vision to his work that aims to use the bring theory into reality.
