Dr. Susan Ledlow is the Curriculum and Faculty Development Specialist
for the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University, where
she coordinated the development of the core graduate and undergraduate
curricula. Susan assists School faculty in the design and assessment
of interdisciplinary seminars and project-based workshops, and offers
training and one-to-one assistance on collaboration and teaming,
active-learning, and project- based learning. Susan also leads a
number of the School’s collaborative educational initiatives.
She is Co-PI and Project Manager for Sustainable Schools
(http://sustainableschools.asu.edu/), an NSF-funded initiative
that teams graduate students, sustainability researchers, high-school
teachers and students, and district administrators in a project
designed to address the challenge of becoming a “sustainable
school.” She is the curriculum developer for a Graduate
Certificate in Global Sustainability Leadership
(http://sustainabilityonline.asu.edu/), a 5-course, online program
developed with the U.S. Army National Guard Bureau that provides
training to both civilian and military leaders. She is also the
curriculum lead on a project with the Instituto de Ecología at
the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México to develop a
master’s degree in sustainability.
Susan has been a teacher in K-12, adult education, community college,
and university settings for 30 years and has been involved in faculty,
staff, and organizational development for 25 years. Immediately prior
to joining the Global Institute of Sustainability, she was at the
Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence at ASU, where she provided
workshops, seminars, and one-to-one assistance to faculty in active
learning strategies, course and curriculum design, grant-writing, and
classroom assessment. She also provided facilitation services on
campus for strategic and long- range planning, decision-making, and
curriculum development.
Susan is an Academic Professional and researcher at the Global
Institute of Sustainability (http://sustainability.asu.edu/).
She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Arizona State
University and her research focuses broadly on psychological aspects
of fostering sustainable behavior. She leads the behavioral research
team that conducts survey and experimental research on energy
efficiency behaviors in Energize Phoenix, a partnership of
the City of Phoenix, Arizona Public Service, and GIOS. She also leads
the Psychology of Environmental Decision-Making research team at the
Decision Center for a Desert City. She particularly enjoys combining
her research with teaching by involving both graduate and
undergraduate research assistants in her projects.
In addition to her work at ASU, Susan consults with educational,
non-profit, and corporate clients. She provides facilitation services
and training in teaming, effective communication in the workplace,
ethical influence in the workplace, decision-making and conflict
resolution, strategic planning, the development and assessment of
training programs, and training of trainers. Her past clients include:
Pathways Home Health and Hospice, The Salvation Army’s National
