Michael Wong is the director of alumni and community engagement for the ASU Alumni Association at Arizona State University. He previously served as director of alumni engagement and career services at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication on ASU’s downtown Phoenix campus, where he supported thousands of students and alumni by creating professional development programs focused on career readiness and long-term success.
Wong began his career in Phoenix at KPNX-TV (NBC/Gannett) as an associate producer/editor and was soon promoted to morning show producer. He then spent more than a decade leading the news and public affairs department at KAET-TV (PBS), becoming one of the youngest television news directors in the Phoenix market. As manager of news and public affairs and executive producer of the award-winning prime-time program Horizon, he helped plan and lead coverage of the Mecham impeachment trial and numerous elections, earning multiple regional Emmy Awards.
Alongside his professional television career, Wong taught at the Cronkite School beginning in 1985. Over the years, he instructed courses in television production, writing, reporting, newscast production, and internships. He also directed the Dow Jones News Fund’s national digital media program at the Cronkite School for 12 years, designing an intensive training curriculum for college students nationwide before their paid summer internships.
Wong brings more than 15 years of international consulting experience, having created and directed training workshops for journalists from Bosnia, Macedonia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Serbia. He is a member of the Cronkite School Hall of Fame.
