Dr. Stephen Foldes is an assistant professor at Barrow Neurological Institute. His work seeks to improve the evaluation and promotion of brain health in clinical populations using multimodal neuroimaging. He is particularly interested in characterizing how the brain is changed with neural dysfunction, as well as developing technological interventions that promote therapeutic neuroplasticity. Methods include imaging (MRI, DTI, morphometry), electrophysiology (magnetoencephalography - MEG, EEG, and sEEG), and neuromodulation. He leads the development of a first-of-its-kind MEG system at BNI, the clinical and research program for high-density EEG, and the advanced presurgical mapping program.
Dr. Foldes’s training is in biomedical engineering and clinical neuroscience with an emphasis on understanding neural dysfunction and developing technology to improve quality of life for patients. Previously, Dr. Foldes trained at the Univ. of Pittsburgh in the Rehabilitation Neural Engineering Laboratories, where he utilized advanced neuroimaging to investigate the functional and structural brain changes that occur after paralysis and the potential for brain-computer interfaces to promote neuroplasticity. His doctoral work at Case Western Reserve and the Cleveland FES center focused on neural and rehabilitation engineering with an emphasis on developing technologies that could directly improve patient care. Here, he developed and evaluated EEG-based brain-computer interfaces to control a neuroprosthesis in realistic settings by individuals with paralysis.
